This month we interviewed Josephine Di Loreto, a Commtractor, Crisis & Strategic Communications Professional. Our expert, Jo, has worked with Elton John, Dita Von Teese and Lady Gaga. She’s lived in Sydney, New York and Hong Kong. And who inspired her to take this star-studded career path? Her high school teacher, Mr Sullivan. Keep on reading to find out more about her.
1. What are you famous for?
My career might not have led me on the path to personal fame; but it definitely gave me the chance to work with some very famous people!
During my corporate years at M.A.C cosmetics, my work with M.A.C Aids Fund team was instrumental in allowing me to work with their Ambassadors for Communications Programs. We managed multiple global fund-raising campaigns, events and interviews with the likes of Sir Elton John, Dita Von Teese and Lady Gaga. They were all generous and kind with their time to promote our cause of Aids and HIV Awareness
I believe as a result, I am capable of working with people from all walks of life and not easily intimidated. At the end of the day, everyone is human and wants to be treated with respect.
2. What interesting skills and experience do you bring to the table as a contractor
Having worked in Sydney, New York City, Hong Kong and across the Asia Pacific Region; I approach things with a consideration for cultural consequences and values. Sometimes, it’s too easy to get caught up in our own way of thinking and it’s nice to have that reference point.
Having worked in crisis management in Hong Kong, when working toward a solution in a crisis situation I think about inclusion. That means everyone in the organisation is part of the solution.
Acting together, with transparency – and adopting a holistic approach across the business. Everyone has a role to play. As global players, we have to consider the impact of the action that caused the crisis and the impact of the steps we are taking to resolve it.
3. I got into communications because….
My high school teacher, Mr Sullivan. He suggested I might like to think about a career in Public Relations. Back then, I had to go and look up what exactly this Public Relations thing was!
4. Do you have any entertaining/surprising/shocking stories about this contracting life?
Every day is different and everyone who does this has a million stories that they would love to share … but we won’t because we are all professionals!
5. What have been your favourite/most memorable projects/engagements/roles/clients?
Clients who are collaborative. There’s nothing better than a client who knows exactly what they want and is willing to work together. It really does come down to trust.
6. Any wise words to share with other professionals in contracting?
Keep talking to the client until you know what the client actually expects from you – what do they want you to deliver? Ask yourself if you can deliver it? Be realistic.
Deliver milestones and manage expectations throughout a project.
7. Any wise observations for clients who are considering engaging contractors?
Be clear about what you want to achieve – explain your goals and the results you expect to achieve. Be honest, be transparent. Be respectful.
